During this media scrum captured by Fight Hub TV, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn is asked about his efforts to sign notable fighters in The States, including Gervonta Davis and Jermell and Jermall Charlo.
Hearn on trying to co-promote Gervonta Davis on DAZN, only to be rebuffed by Mayweather Promotions:
“It’s disappointing, because when you’ve got a kid out there on social media moaning and saying ‘I can’t get fights’ — a talent like Gervonta Davis should be boxing four times a year. Right, so he’s boxed once a year and I’ve made him an offer for 2 or 3 times as much money as he’s making, and keep him active, but it probably doesn’t suit — it suits Gervonta, but it probably doesn’t suit Mayweather Promotions. So it’s disappointing but it is what it is. I’m not gonna approach Gervonta Davis [directly], I approach Mayweather to work together on Gervonta Davis.”
On trying to sign the Charlo brothers:
“I mean I’ve just made them an offer which is three times what they’re making at the moment, probably. I just think they’re so easily talked [out of it].”
On how he knows when he’s overpaying fighters:
“We’re already overpaying! [The Charlos are] overpaid on their current purse, let alone my offer!...There’s some very good people on that side who convince people of doing certain things that actually make no sense at all. So Charlo’s like ‘Yeah, send me a real offer.’ Well it’s like, hang on a minute, you just got an offer probably — definitely two times, maybe three times what you’re making, and you’re saying it’s a poor offer. Yet you’re boxing for half at the moment, against Willie Monroe.
“And actually what you’re gonna find at the moment is, there’s no fights for [Jermall] in the middleweight division! Because all the champions are gonna be on DAZN, so that’s why — no disrespect to Willie Monroe, but he fought Billy Joe Saunders, like hardly won a round. That’s a poor fight [Charlo-Monroe]. And where is the middleweight opposition to fight Charlo?! How can he win a belt unless he’s over here?
“So if we’re offering him two or three times as much money, plus all the champions are on DAZN, what are you waiting for other than people feeding you with stuff that makes you think differently?
“I just think that if you wanna be a champion, you wanna fight the champions, they’re on DAZN. I don’t mean to be arrogant and say ‘You’ve got to join with DAZN otherwise you’re gonna be frozen out,’ but obviously if you’re not with us — it’s like if I got a welterweight at the moment, it’s gonna be very hard for me to give them a shot at a world title, because the welterweights are on Showtime.”
