Sor Rungvisai-Ancajas “will happen” in 2019

Both hold super flyweight titles

Top Rank’s Bob Arum, who promotes IBF super flyweight champ Jerwin Ancajas, is pushing hard to pit his fighter against WBC titlist and consensus number one Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. He tells The Manila Bulletin that he had a “productive” meeting with Sor Rungvisai promoter Tom Loeffler and intends to stage the bout in “February or March” on U.S. soil.

The fight would theoretically air on ESPN or ESPN+, who extended their contract with Top Rank earlier this year.

Sor Rungvisai (47-4-1, 41 KO) has dialed back his competition since facing Roman Gonzalez (twice) and Juan Francisco Estrada in sequence, defeating Young Gil Bae and Iran Diaz. He shows no signs of slowing down and remains one of the division’s most relentless and entertaining fighters.

Sailing has not been quite as smooth for Ancajas (30-1-2, 20 KO), who defeated McJoe Arroyo for the belt back in 2016. After defending his belt five times, four by knockout, Ancajas escaped with a draw against Alex Santiago two months ago in a fight our own Wil Esco scored for Santiago.

It’s not as enticing a matchup as it was when Ancajas was smashing people left and right, but I’m still down for it. Best of luck, Bob.
