Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya fielded some media questions at yesterday’s final press conference for Canelo Alvarez vs. Rocky Fielding, and specifically gives some thoughts on his plans for Canelo going forward.
DLH on if he thinks Canelo moving up to 168 will help his punching power:
“I believe so. I mean, Canelo’s a thick kid. He’s not a tall kid but he’s a thick kid, you know, his neck, his legs. And he punches hard. I think that after seeing him last week in sparring, manhandling light heavyweights, I think Canelo can get the knockout in the later rounds.”
On what opponent he has in mind for Canelo’s May 4th fight, and if it could possible be Golovkin:
“Well, if he wants to fight Canelo for the third time he has to come to DAZN. But, look, I already separated May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena for Canelo, there’s no opponent whatsoever. I’m not even thinking about anybody yet. We’ll see what happens Saturday night and we’ll take it from there.”
On his prediction for Canelo-Fielding:
“Late round knockout. Yeah.”
On what he thinks of a potential Canelo fight against Jermall Charlo:
“Oh, absolutely. I love that fight. I love the fight. I think that fight will happen in the future. You know, Canelo will fight anybody. We have our plan, we know what we wanna do. I think Canelo-Charlo would be a terrific, terrific fight, in the future. “
On how Canelo will be able to cope with tall, rangy middleweights such as Danny Jacobs, Demetrius Andrade, and Jermall Charlo:
“Well, we’ll see when he fights ‘em. And mark my words, he will fight them. I mean, Canelo wants to be great. He wants to be great, so in order to be great you have to fight the likes of the Jacobs, the Charlos, everybody they put in from on him.”
