Guess they weren’t kidding about it being “nearly done.”
Gervonta Davis vs. Abner Mares, which has been in consideration since August, finally has a date and location: February 9th at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The L.A. Times also reports that the bout will air on Showtime.
Davis (20-0, 19 KO) had a productive 2017, picking up a trio of knockouts, but made just one appearance in 2018, a three-round stomping of Jesus Cuellar for the WBA “Super” super featherweight belt. Mares (31-3-1, 15 KO) has fought twice since defeating Cuellar in December of 2016, winning a technical decision over Andres Gutierrez and losing his rematch with Leo Santa Cruz.
This will be Mares’ super featherweight debut; he has never weighed in above 128 pounds and did his best work at 118.
Mares is far from an ideal opponent, but after Davis’ inactivity and various issues with his management, I guess it’s good to see him in action at all. At least somewhere other than a street fight.
