Francisco Fonseca was plenty game and gave IBF super featherweight champion Tevin Farmer a solid fight tonight at Madison Square Garden, but it wasn’t enough to take the title, as Farmer won clearly by unanimous decision on the Canelo-Rocky undercard.
Judges scored the fight 117-111 unanimously for Farmer. BLH scored it 116-112 and 117-111 for Farmer.
Farmer (28-4-1, 6 KO) had promised an early knockout before the fight, but that never came, as Fonseca (22-2-1, 16 KO) took a lot of solid punches and took them well. The punch stats were relatively close and the fight was more competitive than the scores might make you think, but there’s no doubt that Farmer deserved the victory, which was his third of 2018, all fights coming since August.
The 28-year-old Farmer said after the fight that he plans to return in March in his native Philadelphia against an opponent to be named. We know he wants Gervonta “Tank” Davis, but with Davis facing Abner Mares on Feb. 9 in San Diego, that’s not going to be next. So we’ll see, but Farmer plans to keep himself active and fighting, defending his title.
