Miguel Berchelt retained his WBC super featherweight title with an as-expected easy win over Maxwell Awuku last night in Cancun, Mexico, stopping Awuku in the third round.
Berchelt (33-1, 29 KO) was originally supposed to face Cristian Mijares in this fight, then when Mijares dropped out, it was going to be Carlo Magali. In the end, it wound up being Ghana’s Awuku (44-4-1, 30 KO), who proved game but overmatched.
Berchelt, 26, dropped Awuku midway into the third round with a right hand, but the challenger got up, only to be put down again moments later. That wasn’t the end, either, as Awuku again tried to fight on, but Berchelt swarmed him and forced the referee to step in.
Hopefully, this tune-up style title defense at home in Mexico was a one-off for Berchelt, who had been featured on HBO for his last two fights, wins over Francisco Vargas and Takashi Miura.
