Carlos Cuadras was the favorite, but McWilliams Arroyo left the victor on Saturday night.

The Mexico vs Puerto Rico boxing rivalry added a new chapter tonight on HBO, with Puerto Rico’s McWilliams Arroyo scoring an upset majority decision win over Carlos Cuadras in a 10-round super flyweight bout.

Arroyo (17-3, 14 KO) won on scores of 95-95, 97-93, and 98-92. BLH had it 97-93 and 98-92, both cards for Arroyo.

In the opening round, Arroyo made it clear that his two-year absence wasn’t going to lead to a rusty start, as he teed off on Cuadras (36-3-1, 27 KO) before Cuadras got back into things in the second and third. But the middle rounds largely favored the underdog, who just did better, cleaner work throughout the fight, and won all of the clearest rounds of the bout.

It was a scrappy affair, not the prettiest fight you’ll see, but entertaining. CompuBox saw Arroyo landing 140 of 713 (20%) of his total punches, and 107 of 414 (26%) of his power shots. Cuadras landed 127 of 776 (16%) total, and 87 of 458 (19%) power punches.
