Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez retained his WBO super middleweight title tonight on ESPN, dominating and stopping Ghana’s Habib Ahmed in the sixth round of their main event from Corpus Christi, Texas.
Coming in, Ahmed (25-1-1, 17 KO) was a total unknown, and the hope was that he’d be able to fight on this level. The fear was that he couldn’t. The fears were realized, as Ramirez (37-0, 25 KO) completely dominated the action, beating the hell out of Ahmed until finally, Ahmed’s corner stopped the fight in the sixth.
Ramirez won every round of the fight, and Ahmed proved to be a truly overmatched title challenger, who probably never should have gotten the shot in the first place.
Ramirez did suffer a cut tonight due to a clash of heads, but should be good to go for a May return, as Bob Arum and Top Rank have stated is the plan. From there, Ramirez would potentially go to Australia to fight Rohan Murdock in the fall, then maybe return for a December fight.
