It looks like we’re good to go! After lots of talk it’s now being reported that Vasyl Lomachenko (10-1, 8 KOs) will be moving up in weight once again to challenge Jorge Linares (44-3, 27 KOs) for his WBA lightweight title. The fighters are said to have officially agreed to terms just last night.
The fight between two of the best technical fighters in the sport has been scheduled for May 12th at Madison Square Garden in New York City, and will be televised on ESPN.
Lomachenko is coming off a dominant performance of Guillermo Rigondeaux last December, in a fight where he broke the Cuban’s will much more than his body. Rigondeaux packed it in after six rounds of being thoroughly outboxed (clearly an unfamiliar situation for him) and has since disappeared from the scene. His once so active Twitter account hasn’t had a post since the night of the fight.
Meanwhile Linares is coming off a unanimous decision win over Mercito Gesta in January. He’s riding a 13-fight winning streak since last losing to Sergio Thompson in early 2012.
