Giuseppe Quartarone, a referee out of Italy, has just been appointed to work the March 31st heavyweight unification fight between Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker. Quartarone has some championship fight experience, previously working Povetkin-Boswell in 2011 which was for a ‘regular’ title.
With the appointment of Quartarone, there Joshua-Parker bout has an international mix of officials which both sides believe will yield a level playing field for the combatants. Parker’s trainer Kevin Barry had this to say to Sky Sports:
”We’ve got three judges - one from New Zealand, one from the UK, one from the United States.
”We’ve got an Italian referee. We signed off on those officials [at the beginning of March]. We’re very happy with what the various sanctioning bodies have appointed for us.”
So long as we have a fair fight with good officiating and scoring, that’s all you can really ask for as a fan or participant. We’ll obviously have to see how things play out on fight night, but for now, with both sides satisfied, things are off to a good start.
