Carl Frampton vs. Nonito Donaire upgraded to interim title fight

The two are ranked #4 and #8, respectively, by the WBO

The April 21st showdown between former champions Carl Frampton and Nonito Donaire has received some added stakes in the form of the interim WBO featherweight title, which doesn’t mean much by itself but does grant the winner mandatory challenger status for Oscar Valdez.

This is one of those rare situations where an interim title actually makes sense, as Valdez is on the sidelines for a while with a broken jaw and WBO #1 JoJo Diaz has Gary Russell Jr. in his sights. #2 Mark Magsayo and #3 Sakaria Lukas Might be annoyed, though.

In any event, Frampton vs. Valdez would be guaranteed fireworks, as would Donaire-Valdez if the Filipino Flash can dredge up some remnant of his former glory. So long as these two can get through their fight without breaking anything important, we’ve got another treat to look forward to in 2018.
