For reasons entirely unbeknownst to me, former champions Sergio Mora and Alfredo Angulo have joined the undercard of the April 7th Showtime card headlined by Erislandy Lara vs. Jarrett Hurd. For reasons even more arcane and inscrutable, they will be fighting at super middleweight despite neither man ever weighing in above 164 pounds.

Mora (28-5-2, 9 KO) has lost two straight to Danny Jacobs and been dropped by his last four opponents, including journeyman and UFC washout Dashon Johnson in 2014. “The Latin Snake” turns 37 this year and is now nearly a decade removed from his title-winning upset of Vernon Forrest.

Angulo (24-6, 20 KO) has looked more or less broken since giving Erislandy Lara the fight of his life. Despite knocking out two no-hopers in 2015, he was completely ineffective against James De La Rosa and Freddy Hernandez before and after, respectively. It’s at the point where putting him in the ring against a competent opponent is legitimate cause for concern; he’s taken some life-changing beatings.

The fight is scheduled for eight rounds and will not be televised.
