If Canelo Alvarez is ruled out for May 5, two names are leading the replacement list.

Should Canelo Alvarez not be allowed to fight on May 5, when he’s scheduled to face Gennady Golovkin in a big rematch of their 2017 draw, there are reportedly two leading candidates to face Golovkin on that date: Billy Joe Saunders and Demetrius Andrade.

Neither is a surprising name. Both have HBO ties, and both have been in the news as a potential replacement. Andrade (25-0, 16 KO) threw his name into the hat quickly, saying he was willing and ready to step in on the date, and Saunders has been mentioned because he’s WBO champion, which would make for a full unification bout.

Saunders had an April 14 fight with Martin Murray scheduled, but it was pushed back to June 23 due to an injury. That said, he could be ready by May 5 — promoter Frank Warren says they will only take the GGG fight if Saunders is in fact at 100 percent.
