With Omar Figueroa out of a scheduled April 21 fight with Adrien Broner due to injury, it now looks like Jessie Vargas will step in to face Broner on Showtime, according to a report at ESPN.

Vargas (28-2, 10 KO) is a former welterweight titleholder and also held the WBA’s secondary belt at 140 pounds, and was thought to be Keith Thurman’s likely return opponent on May 19 in Brooklyn. This news leaves us further wondering what, exactly, Thurman is going to do in his return to action, and probably means that the matchup will be even more of a “tune-up” than most anticipated.

Broner (33-3, 24 KO) is coming off of a loss last July to Mikey Garcia, and is looking to keep himself relevant at this point. Vargas is a good boxer and this is a big fight and opportunity for him, so Broner will have to be as sharp as possible. While Broner-Figueroa figured to be a terrific action fight, Vargas is an entirely different sort of opponent.
