And the hits keep coming.
Irish brawler Spike O’Sullivan, whom many fans had grudgingly accepted as Gennady Golovkin’s likely foe for May 5th, has declined an offer to step in against “GGG,” which is probably the healthy decision.
With O’Sullivan out, Team Golovkin balking at the likes of Sergey Derevyanchenko and Demetrius Andrade, and NSAC showing a welcome unwillingness to sanction a mismatch, prospects look grim. It remains up in the air whether the card will proceed at all; the only completed bout at the moment is Roman Gonzalez vs. Pedro Guevara, so it’s not like rescheduling would be a huge logistical issue as far as the fighters are concerned.
At this point, they might as well just rebook Gennady for July against Billy Joe Saunders or Derevyanchenko. I get that they want to preserve a September fight with Canelo, but that matchup has lost a whole heap of luster at this point.
