Golden Boy: Canelo looks forward to returning on Mexican Independence Day weekend

Canelo may have gotten a retroactive 6-month suspension, but he still has a big payday awaiting him.

Following yesterday’s official news that Canelo was retroactively suspended for six months for his failed drug tests which scuttled the upcoming fight with Gennady Golovkin, Golden Boy promotions released an official statement saying they’re okay with the decision.

The promotional company maintained that Canelo tested positive for banned substance clenbuterol due to food contamination and say they provided a ‘great deal of evidence to support those facts.’ The company also made it clear that Canelo intends to make his return for the next big fight weekend of the year — Mexican Independence Day.

“Canelo looks forward to returning to the ring in September for Mexican Independence Day weekend to represent Mexico and boxing in what will be the sport’s biggest event of the year. He is ready to continue his remarkable record of fighting at the highest level.”

It’s all but assured that return fight will still be against Gennady Golovkin, who is obviously wanting to minimize almost all risk until he can secure the bag. And Golovkin’s promoter essentially acknowledges as much by publicly stating that Canelo is still their top priority while targeting, shall we say, ‘less-than-inspiring’ opposition for this May 5th fight.

All in all that’s not so surprising, though. Golovkin is 36-years-old now and a Canelo fight is clearly the biggest payday for him in or around his division. He and his team can make a risk-reward analysis with the best of ‘em.
