Working with new trainer Kevin Cunningham and targeting a return to the top of the 130-pound ranks after missing weight ahead of his last fight, Gervonta Davis looked every bit a “Tank” tonight, plowing over Jesus Cuellar in three rounds in Brooklyn.
Davis (20-0, 19 KO) tagged Cuellar (28-3, 21 KO) early and often in this one, and dropped him in the second round with a body shot. Cuellar got up and made it out of the round, but that was really the beginning of the end.
Cuellar was down again on body shots in the third round, and again got up, but Davis smelled blood in the water and went for the finish, getting it by battering Cuellar down against the ropes. The referee stepped in to stop the fight there, with Cuellar down a third time.
The official time of the stoppage was 2:45 of round three. Davis, 23, now holds the WBA “world” super featherweight title.
