Keith Thurman, whose “One Time” nickname has taken a serious drubbing these past few years, has officially vacated his WBC welterweight title after more than a year out of the ring. As a result, the WBC has ordered #1 Danny Garcia to face #2 Shawn Porter for the vacant belt, with Thurman fighting the winner on his return.
He still holds the WBA “Super” title.
Thurman (28-0, 22 KO) defeated Garcia in March 2017 for his fourth decision victory in five fights. He was set to make his return from elbow surgery on May 19th, only to suffer an injury to his left hand and leave TBA without an opponent. He turns 30 this November and his name is fading from the public consciousness; it’s hard not to feel like the clock is ticking.
At least we get an excellent fight between Garcia (34-1, 20 KO) and Porter (28-2-1, 17 KO) to tide us over.
