The May 26th ESPN+ doubleheader featuring Jerwin Ancajas and Kal Yafai in separate title defenses officially has a home in Fresno, California’s Save Mart Center.
Jose Benavidez has joined the card as well, throwing down with the inimitable TBA.
The intention is to set up a super flyweight unification bout between Ancajas (29-1-1, 20 KO), who holds the IBF title, and Yafai (23-0, 14 KO) who holds the WBA title, but neither man is in a gimme. Ancajas faces Jonas Sultan (14-3, 9 KO), a countryman with recent wins over Sonny Boy Jaro and Johnriel Casimero, while Yafai takes on David Carmona (21-5-5, 9 KO), who’s hit a rough patch but gave Carlos Cuadras a solid out last year.
Sultan is actually ranked one slot above Ancajas on BoxRec.
Ancajas and Yafai are clearly the best super flyweights to not appear on Superfly, and a fight between the two is one of the better matchups that the division has to offer.
