De La Hoya goes fishing for heavyweight stars

Oscar is back at it, selling dreams on Twitter...

While Canelo Alvarez is looking bad out here — getting flogged in the court of public opinion over his failed drug tests and subsequent withdrawal from his rematch with Gennady Golovkin — his Golden Boy promoter is arguably looking worse by panhandling the streets of Twitter.

Early this morning De La Hoya took to the social media app to sell heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder on the prospects of signing promotional deals with him, promising to make them both huge stars in the US.

That message obviously drew some taunts from the public, who teased De La Hoya over his drug usage, but Oscar wasn’t above clapping back and engaging posters directly with some harsh words of his own. You can go take a look at his timeline this morning for a few laughs which will get your day off to a good start.

Anyway, when challenged on the idea that someone like Joshua would need to come to the U.S. to become a star and make big money when he’s already doing huge numbers across the pond, De La Hoya responded with this message.

He also took the same approach when discussing Deontay Wilder, who is a heavyweight champion but not nearly the draw Anthony Joshua is.

But De La Hoya would go on to contend that his intentions are pure as the driven snow, and not about his own monetary gain. He just wants to see the sport thrive and Joshua reach his full potential.

It’s not abundantly clear what the whole point of all this is, though, other than to stir up some shit. Both Joshua and Wilder appear to be in rather comfortable positions, with Joshua signed to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing outfit and Wilder aligned with Lou DiBella and powerful manager Al Haymon. Joshua has even publicly stated that he has no real intention of bringing his act over to the U.S.

But maybe Oscar is just planting some seeds in the hopes of a bountiful harvest at some point...You know, April showers bring May flowers and so forth.
