Perhaps cognizant of the horrific optics involved in opting out of the WBC’s Clean Boxing Program, Canelo Alvarez has hooked up with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) for year-round testing.
Though Alvarez’s (49-1-2, 34 KO) excuse of tainted meat satisfied NSAC, he and his team have done a bang-up job of pissing away any lingering goodwill. That said, it looks as though a September rematch with Golovkin remains Priority #1, so Canelo will still get loadsamoney if he can pass all his tests.
Whether or not Canelo actually doped, he’s become something of a microcosm of boxing’s myriad issues. The favoritism he’s experienced from the WBC has been nothing short of cringeworthy, and despite sinking the Cinco de Mayo blockbuster, he still gets a big-money shot at Golovkin ahead of Sergiy Derevyanchenko and other worthy contenders.
We’ve got four more months of this nonsense ahead of us. Hold on to your butts.
