With Adonis Stevenson, who faces Badou Jack on Saturday, saying earlier this week that media rival Sergey Kovalev has never wanted to fight him, Kovalev has fired back, dismissing Stevenson’s claims and saying he’s rooting for Jack to beat him.

“He talks trash! He can say whatever he wants but whatever comes from his mouth is trash. ... I hope Badou Jack beats him and gets his title because he’s more motivated and busier than ‘Chickenson’. ‘Chickenson’ manages to keep his belt somehow, it’s strange and I don’t understand it. If Jack wins, it will be easier to make a fight, I hope.”

Kovalev (32-2-1, 28 KO) has his own fight set for August 4, when he defends the WBO light heavyweight title against Eleider Alvarez on HBO from Atlantic City.

Alvarez (23-0, 11 KO) has been Stevenson’s mandatory challenger for what seems like forever, but never did get his shot at the WBC belt.
