WBO middleweight titleholder Billy Joe Saunders doesn’t care that Canelo’s hair sample tested negative for clenbuterol — he’s still a cheater and always will be according to Saunders.
“My opinion on that is that he’s a cheat, a drugs cheat,” Saunders told ESPN. “He’s still a cheat, always will be.
”Everything’s he’s done in boxing in my eyes has evaporated.”
But although Saunders has strong feelings about Canelo’s credibility (or lack thereof) the middleweight champion says he’d still sign a fight against Canelo because it represents a huge financial windfall for him.
“You’ve got to go where the money is. Of course I would [fight him] but it doesn’t change my opinion that he’s a drugs cheat.”
Whether or not Canelo and Golden Boy promotions would be willing to strike a deal with Saunders as he continues to trash the Mexican fighter in the media is questionable, but Saunders first has a fourth title defense scheduled on June 23 against Martin Murray.
