Jarrett Hurd says he doesn’t want a rematch with Erislandy Lara, feeling that he’s already beat the Cuban southpaw, and that he’s looking to face Kell Brook and then unify the division instead.
“I don’t want a rematch. I don’t know how long I can hold the weight class. I’m trying to become undisputed champ and I feel like I just beat you so that’s going backwards. ... What we want is a fight with Kell Brook because we want a durable opponent, somebody who will be competitive and a fight with Kell Brook would be really competitive.”
Hurd (22-0, 15 KO) may not have a choice if he wants to keep his WBA belt — which would be key for unifying the division, of course — because the sanctioning body already ordered the rematch with Lara (25-3-2, 14 KO) about a month ago.
Hurd, 27, also mentions that he wants to face WBC titleholder Jermell Charlo, but he’s not sure he’d be able to make a fight with WBO titleholder Jaime Munguia. He expects if he were to beat Jermell, that moving up to 160 and facing Jermall Charlo would also be an option.
Do you think Hurd should have to do the immediate rematch with Lara? Will you think less of him if he doesn’t?
