Jerwin Ancajas’ performance was met with some boos from the fans in Fresno tonight, but the Filipino southpaw retained his IBF super flyweight title with a wide decision victory over countryman Jonas Sultan, tallying scores of 117-111, 119-109, and 119-109 for the win.
BLH had it 119-109 for Ancajas, who improves to 30-1-1 (20 KO) with the win. Sultan drops to 14-4 (9 KO), ending a five-fight winning streak.
Ancajas, 26, was able to dictate the pace and distance of the fight pretty handily, using his jab to good effect to keep the more awkward, less polished Sultan, also 26, from establishing any real rhythm at all. It was a fight where class really told the story, and the smoother Ancajas was simply the better fighter.
Sultan did make it sort of interesting late by finding a home for his left hook a bit more often, but the fight was never really in any doubt. Ancajas opened a big lead early and held it.
If tonight was a setup to build to Ancajas against Kal Yafai, who do you like in that one?
