Hopkins: You can buy Golovkin-Martirosyan tickets with an EBT card!

Bernard Hopkins trashes Gennady Golovkin’s fight this weekend.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

Bernard Hopkins doesn’t think much of this Saturday’s fight between Gennady Golovkin and Vanes Martirosyan and is letting everyone know about it.

Hopkins’ interested are admittedly aligned with Golden Boy Promotions, who represents Canelo Alvarez, so it’s not completely surprising that he would take this stance, but here’s what he had to say about the fight and teasing that you can purchase tickets with a welfare card...

Hopkins on Golovkin taking a risk against Martirosyan:

“Take a big risk? Fighting who?! [turns back to camera]. Are you serious? Huh?! This ain’t politics of Trump being president...This is no situation like that! You’re saying that there’s a chance that GGG can lose Saturday?! Honestly?...

“Listen, I’ll tell you what. What’s the over and under in this fight?...[Golovkin is a] 33:1 favorite! [Blank stare].

On a possible rematch between Canelo and Golovkin this fall:

“It’s a thing now that proves to the naysayers because of the last results of the [hair sample] test. Now hopefully we can move on and GGG can, I guess, tie my [middleweight title defense] record and lose in September to not break it. See this is to me a perfect agenda, myself, personally, because I didn’t script it this way...things happen for a reason.

“At the end of the day, one thing about boxing, negative becomes marketable...people is gonna show up, they gonna buy it, and they gonna root for their guy.”

On there being no plan to have Canelo face ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan this September instead:

“I don’t know. Possibly. You can’t force it. You can’t force GGG to fight. Listen, GGG went on and said some things that, you know, he’s not even looking forward [to fighting Canelo again] — I’ve heard mixed messages from both sides. Listen, we know who the cash cow is. We know who the guy to bring the numbers in. GGG need a dance partner, they giving tickets away! You know they cut, slash the prices down. I think you can get a ticket with a EBT card. No disrespect to welfare, I grew up on it.

“I’ve never seen in a boxing event where you can have your card and get a boxing ticket to a supposedly — right — worldwide, top of the level boxing match! I want the people out there to feed their kids first...this is absurd. This is really an abuse of the system.”
