Golovkin vs Martirosyan: Live streaming results and round by round coverage

Gennady Golovkin returns against Vanes Martirosyan on HBO.

Ed Mulholland/HBO

Tonight at 11 pm ET on HBO, it’s a doubleheader from StubHub Center in Carson, California, as Gennady Golovkin returns to defend two of his three middleweight titles against Vanes Martirosyan.

Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KO) was of course meant to be rematching Canelo Alvarez on this date, but that fight was scrapped after Alvarez failed drug tests ahead of the fight. In steps Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KO), a junior middleweight contender who hasn’t fought in two years, and has lost his bigger fights at 154 pounds.

Martirosyan promises to bring the fight to GGG and shoot for the upset, but he is a 30-to-1 underdog for a reason. This isn’t the fight we wanted on May 5, but it’s the fight we have, and they do fight the fights for a reason. And we can never discount StubHub Magic — maybe, if nothing else, we get a war.

In the co-feature, HBO will broadcast the first female fight in network history, as pound-for-pound queen Cecilia Braekhus (32-0, 9 KO) takes on Kali Reis (13-6-1, 4 KO) in a fight set for 10 rounds.

Round-By-Round

Gennady Golovkin vs Vanes Martirosyan

Round 1: Vanes with a right to the body. Jab up top. GGG goes for a right hand over the top. Hook from GGG. Martirosyan throwing the right. He looks ready to rumble. GGG jabbing. Both jab, GGG lands. Crowd chanting for GGG. Vanes shoots a right, it’s short. Left hook misses. GGG feeling it out for the moment. Jab and a right is blocked from GGG. Jab gets in again. Good right from Vanes. GGG’s jab has been really good this round. Good right hand and power jab from Vanes! Golovkin’s jab was good, Vanes landed the better power shots. I shade to the consistency, barely. Golovkin 10-9

Round 2: Right hand from GGG, and then a good uppercut hurts Vanes! Vanes ties up. That could’ve been a knockdown call, but Jack Reiss probably rightly rules it a push. GGG shoots another uppercut, it misses. Right hand from Vanes, hard left back from GGG! Right hand from GGG! Another! GGG opening up and Vanes is down, face-first to the canvas! The count is on! He’s on his knees at eight, but he’s counted out! Golovkin KO-2

Cecilia Braekhus vs Kali Reis

Round 1: Braekhus comes out jabbing and working. Reis trying to work inside some, Braekhus ties her up easily. Right hand from Braekhus, but Reis back, too, and gets a hook in. Right to the body from Reis, a swiping shot that didn’t land flush. Another little hook inside from Reis. Right to the body from Reis. Reis won this round for me, but the argument can go the other way. Reis 10-9

Round 2: Braekhus doing better work this round. Braekhus with a left hook. Right hand and a left hook from Braekhus. Jab gets in. Reis is fighting. Braekhus setting things up well and she gets in a right hand near the end of the round. Braekhus 10-9, 19-19

Round 3: Braekhus with a jab to the body, shot upstairs, and another. Good combo from Braekhus, head and body. Right hand from Braekhus. Braekhus jabbing and landing. Reis gets a little shot in, but Braekhus was throwing and landing at the same time. Braekhus 10-9, 29-28

Round 4: Right to the body from Braekhus. Right up top skims and maybe glancingly lands. Right hand up top again. Head-body combo again. Her rhythm has picked up and settled in, and the class is showing. Right hand again from Braekhus. Left hook from Braekhus as Reis is throwing. Braekhus 10-9, 39-37

Round 5: Braekhus staying busy, winning this with class. Reis still battling, trying to move in and do some work, but she’s getting picked apart. It’s not pure dominance, but it’s not terribly far off. Braekhus swinging a hook, not landing. Reis missing her own shots back. Braekhus with a glancing right. Braekhus 10-9, 49-46

Round 6: Braekhus putting punches together. Left hook lands. Jab gets through. Right hand gets through. Reis’ nose bleeding. Braekhus has taken over this fight. Reis still trying her best, but it doesn’t appear to be good enough. Not a surprise, mind you, as this is going about as expected. Reis with a right hand at the end of the round. Braekhus 10-9, 59-55

Round 7: Braekhus doing well still. HEY! Reis with a right hand and down goes Braekhus! How about that?! Braekhus popped right back up, almost embarrassed, but it was a real knockdown. First of Braekhus’ career. Another good right late in the round from Reis. Reis 10-8, Braekhus 67-65

Round 8: Reis trying to charge forward now. Braekhus still working, and throws a stylish left hook that gets in. Braekhus pumping the jab and throwing the hook, too. Braekhus with a nice bounce-back round after the knockdown. Good right hand on the button, but Reis hurts Braekhus with a right hand late in the round again! The bell sounds and gets her out of any potential trouble. Braekhus’ corner tells her immediately after the round to stop trading. Braekhus 10-9, 77-74

Round 9: Another good right from Reis about halfway into the round, and Braekhus ties her up. Braekhus is still the better boxer, but Reis is clearly the bigger puncher in here, and has a shot until this is over. Reis trying to work as Braekhus tries to tie her up. Good right from Braekhus. This was a Reis round for me. Braekhus is looking tired. Reis 10-9, Braekhus 86-84

Round 10: Reis going for the aggression, Braekhus has been told to stay out of a fight. Both throwing at mid ring. Braekhus doing some good work here in the first half of the round, not listening to her corner. She feels she knows better and she may be right — this fight could be closer than Banks thinks. Right hands from Braekhus. This is a really good final round from Braekhus, likely sealing the fight. Braekhus 10-9, 96-93
