Roy Jones, Jim Lampley react to Golovkin knockout of Martiroysan

The HBO crew gives their take on Gennady Golovkin’s win over Vanes Martirosyan.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

Following Gennady Golovkin’s second-round KO win over Vanes Martiroysan on HBO, the commentating crew gave the media a couple of their brief thoughts on the fight and what might be next for the middleweight champion.

Jim Lampley:

“Golovkin’s gotta get loose and be reckless. That’s what he did. When he’s reckless he’s unstoppable.”

Roy Jones:

“Golovkin looked good as usual but you’re fighting a kid that’s been off for 23 months so, of course, you better look good against him or you’re gonna have problems!

“Of course he should have fought [Derevyanchenko] but at the same time, smart-wise, you don’t wanna fight Derevyanchenko because he’s the guy who’s gonna challenge you! And you trying to get a Canelo fight! So you don’t wanna mess up your payday so that’s probably why he didn’t.”

Jones on if he thinks Golovkin will fight Canelo next in a rematch:

“Yeah. More than likely.”
