ESPN reports that, rather than draw this out any longer, Golden Boy Promotions have given Gennady Golovkin an ultimatum: accept a 42.5/57.5 split by 12:00 PM Pacific (3:00 PM Eastern) tomorrow or they work on Canelo vs. Danny Jacobs instead. The rematch (or Canelo-Jacobs would take place on September 15th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
GBP President (or GBPP, if you prefer) Eric Gomez sounds like he means it.
“This is final,” Gomez said. “We’ve been through everything. We’ve been through the hoops, the monkey bars, the slides. No more playing games. He has until noon (PT) to accept or walk away. If he walks away, good luck to him.”
Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KO) recently lost his IBF belt, which the sanctioning body just ordered Jacobs and Sergiy Derevyanchenko to fight for. His current mandatories include Jermall Charlo, who owns the interim version of GGG’s WBC belt, and “regular” WBA champ Ryota Murata, who’s in negotiations to fight Rob Brant. For all their animosity, Canelo (49-1-2, 34 KO) is the most lucrative target on his radar by orders of magnitude.
We’ll keep you posted as this “will he or won’t he” situation develops.
