Canelo and Golovkin reach deal for Sept. 15 rematch

It went past the supposed deadline, but both sides were ultimately able to reach an agreement.

The on-again, off-again saga that is Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin has taken yet another turn, with both sides finally agreeing to terms to hold a middleweight title rematch on September 15.

Yesterday Golden Boy issued what they called their final offer of a 57 12 to 42 12 split in favor of Canelo and said that Golovkin had until 12 p.m. PT time to accept the offer. But as the deadline hit Golovkin still rejected the offer, prompting Oscar De La Hoya to say the fight was dead.

Yet just minutes later there was another proposed offer which was described as a ‘Hail Mary‘ effort to save the fight, and that was ultimately accepted by Golovkin, although the terms that got the deal across the finish line were not disclosed.

Canelo and Golovkin will once again meet at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the site of their first hotly-debated draw last year. You can bet that this fight will be much more personal than their first meeting considering all the insults that have flung back and forth over the past few months. But luckily they’ll get the chance to settle it in the ring.

Who ya got in the rematch?
