While Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez once again attempt to define the future of the middleweight division on September 15th in Vegas, the odd champion out, WBO titleist Billy Joe Saunders, will do his thing in London’s O2 Arena. Frank Warren has booked the place and raised the possibility of James DeGale subbing in for TBA.
Saunders (26-0, 12 KO) has twice withdrawn from planned fights with Martin Murray since his December decision over David Lemieux, leaving Murray to fight Roberto Garcia in Greenwich this upcoming Saturday. He’s fought just three times since 2015, defeating Artur Akavov, Willie Monroe Jr., and the aforementioned Lemieux.
DeGale (24-2-1, 14 KO) was on the wrong end of an Upset of the Year finalist last December when Caleb Truax edged him by majority decision. He reclaimed the IBF super middleweight belt in April with a narrow win over Truax.
As far as who these guys are supposed to be fighting, Saunders’ #1 contender is Demetrius Andrade, who’s reportedly lining up to fight Yamaguchi Falcao in a month, while DeGale technically doesn’t have a top contender besides interim champ Jose Uzcategui. #2 Caleb Plant was supposed to fight #4 Rocky Fielding for the slot, but Fielding elected to fight Tyron Zeuge instead.
