Jermell Charlo did enough to take a majority decision win over Austin Trout for the Showtime opener tonight. The fight ended up being a fairly dull and tactical affair with Trout using his crafty style to keep from taking too much damage. The official scorecards ended up being 113-113, and two cards in favor of Charlo, 115-111 and 118-108. I had the fight scored for Charlo, 117-109 for BLH.

The bout was fought in spurts of action, with the crowd repeatedly booing throughout as there were long lulls in the action. Even still, Charlo basically fought in a technically solid, ambushing style, waiting for moments to mount his strong attacks and put Trout on the defensive. To that end Charlo was able to score two knockdowns in the fight, in the 3rd and the 8th round while Trout mostly tried to peck away on the outside during the other moments.

In the post-fight interview the Los Angeles crowd booed Charlo — for the performance more so than the win itself it would seem. I wrote in the live coverage thread that it was a very forgettable fight and that it was. Charlo notches a win on his resume though, and retains his WBC junior middleweight world title as Trout goes back to the drawing board.
