Rocky Fielding went on the road for a shot at the WBA “world” super middleweight title today in Germany, and knocked out Tyron Zeuge in the fifth round to win the belt, putting himself firmly in the mix toward the top of the 168-pound division.
Fielding (27-1, 15 KO) has never been known as a particularly hard puncher, really, but his power was too much for Zeuge (22-1-1, 12 KO), who was hurt repeatedly before being dropped in the fifth. Zeuge was knocked down and wasn’t getting up, and trainer Juergen Braehmer was waving the white towel, anyway.
It’s a huge win for Fielding, a 30-year-old fighter who has very successfully rebuilt his career after a TKO-1 loss to Callum Smith in 2015. It’s his sixth straight win, and obviously the biggest of his career.
We’ll see what Fielding does next, there’s a chance he could have to do a rematch with Zeuge, but there will be a lot of options if that’s not the case.
For what it’s worth, George Groves holds the WBA “super world” title in the division.
