As expected, Danny Garcia will indeed face Shawn Porter on September 8th for the vacant WBC welterweight title, headlining a Showtime card at Barclays Center. The announcement does not mention David Benavidez vs. Anthony Dirrell or Charles Martin vs. Adam Kownacki, which were expected to serve as co-features, but Showtime suggests there there will soon be a press conference with more details.
Despite the delays, Garcia (34-1, 20 KO) vs. Porter (28-2-1, 17 KO) remains one of the best fights the division has to offer. Both men have excellent finishing instincts, toughness for days, and have given us some quality wars in the past.
As mentioned, this card will air opposite Superfly 3, which thus far features Donnie Nietes vs. Aston Palicte and the return of three-division champion Kazuto Ioka. I’d say Showtime is currently well ahead in this exchange, especially since Roman Gonzalez, who could have lended Superfly some much-needed star power, is reportedly looking to return a week later on the GGG-Canelo 2 undercard.
