Tonight at 9:30 pm ET on ESPN from Fresno, California, Top Rank presents a doubleheader of action with a makeshift main event and co-feature, but some fine fighters in action regardless.
Tonight’s main event was supposed to be a 140-pound title fight between Jose Ramirez and Danny O’Connor, but that was canceled on Friday when O’Connor was admitted to the hospital with severe hydration during his weight cut.
Instead, we’ll see “Mean Machine” Egidijus Kavaliauskas (19-0, 16 KO) in a 10-round welterweight main event against Juan Carlos Abreu (21-3-1, 19 KO), a matchup of power punchers on paper. Kavaliauskas, if nothing else, is always entertaining to watch, so that’s a reason to tune in tonight. He’s also a fast-rising contender in the 147-pound division, and sooner than later could find himself facing Terence Crawford, so if you want to scout a potential Crawford opponent, it’s a good chance to do that, too.
The co-feature will be a super featherweight bout, also set for 10 rounds, between Andy Vences (20-0-1, 12 KO) and Frank De Alba (22-3-2, 9 KO).
