It’s been officially announced by WBSS organizer Kalle Sauerland that Chris Eubank Jr. will serve as the alternate should either fighter in the super middleweight finals between George Groves and Callum Smith be unable to go by September.
Eubank Jr. lost in the semifinals against Groves, but Groves would dislocate his shoulder which put his finals spot in jeopardy. For some time it wasn’t clear how that situation would play out but Sauerland tried to give the fans what they wanted, and Groves what he earned, by pushing back the scheduled finals in order to give Groves some time to heal up.
“We put the final date back a little bit to try our very best to get the original final,” Sauerland told iFL TV. “But ultimately if there’s an injury in training now, it will be ‘X’ against Eubank.
”Sorry, but that’s the way it is. But if you look at either side it would still be a cracker.
”You would still like to watch Groves-Smith as a priority, so we bent over backwards to do this. That fight will take place in September.”
There’s still no firm date on when the Groves-Smith finals will take place, but Sauerland says it’s very possible the finals match takes place outside of the UK, despite both fighters hailing from the region.
