Conor McGregor set for UFC return, killing boxing ideas

Goodbye, Conor, from all of us in the boxing world.

Hey! I know right off what you’re thinking: this guy’s not a boxer, why is the boxing site writing about him?

Short answer is easy, baby: cheap web traffic. Longer answer: listen, the last time anyone saw him doing something other than throwing stuff at buses, it was in the boxing ring in August 2017, when Floyd Mayweather played with his food for a while before finally devouring it.

Anyway, it was announced this afternoon that McGregor, who is ranked as the 1,572nd best junior middleweight boxer in the world today by BoxRec, will make his return to mixed martial arts and the UFC at UFC 229 on October 6, facing Khabib Nurmagomedov in a lightweight championship fight.

So that kills any speculation that maybe McGregor could box someone like Manny Pacquiao, who is at the point in his career where he’ll want the biggest money fights, and to be entirely fair to the people who threw his name out as a possible Pacquiao opponent, it probably would have made pretty good money, if not anywhere near Mayweather-McGregor money.

So that’s that. And unless McGregor ever returns to the boxing ring, that’s probably the last you’ll hear about him here. Thanks for the headlines, Conor. It was a weird year talking about you.
