WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol moved to 14-0 (11 KOs) tonight with a successful title defense against Isaac Chilemba. Bivol showcased that he was simply too well-rounded and talented for someone like Chilemba to deal with, but he didn’t assert himself to close the show and win him any new fans.
After 12 rounds, and the last six rather slow, Bivol won a unanimous decision on two scores of 120-108, and one 116-112 card. I also scored the fight a shutout for Bivol for BLH.
CompuBox stats had Bivol landing 154/447 total punches (34.5%) while Chilemba landed 73 of 472 total punches (15.5%).
With the win fans can and should start clamoring for a showdown with fellow Russian champion Sergey Kovalev should he win in tonight’s main event. It will be an interesting match up between fighters of a similar skillset and with their titles, of course, on the line.
