Eleider Alvarez plans December defense

Both Sergey Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol are on the table

Having thoroughly derailed HBO’s plans for a unification bout between Sergey Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol, newly minted WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Eleider Alvarez is looking to take a short break before returning in December. HBO had set aside December 8th for the Kovalev-Bivol match, which Alvarez has the option of taking “The Krusher’s” place in.

According to Alvarez, Kovalev had a rematch clause in his contract, so that could take precedent. Alvarez also brings up Adonis Stevenson, whom he’s been chasing for years, but “Superman” is looking at a fight with mandatory challenger Oleksandr Gvozdyk later this year. I suppose Alvarez (24-0, 12 KO) having a belt would make him a tempting target, though.

After that performance, I’d be happy to see “Storm” against anyone. I’m also against instant rematches and for unification, though, so my preference would be Bivol, then the Stevenson-Gvozdyk winner sometime next year.

Of course, that makes too much sense for this sport, so my expectations are tempered.
