Caleb Plant’s scheduled August 24 IBF title challenge against Jose Uzcategui will be pushed back until “late fall,” after Plant suffered a broken hand in training.
“Broke my left hand on the pinky side and got two screws put in it,” Plant told ESPN on Wednesday. “I’ll be out a couple of months. I was sparring and hit someone on the tip of the elbow.”
Plant (17-0, 10 KO) is a 26-year-old super middleweight prospect who is looking to graduate from that status, and the fight with Uzcategui (27-2, 23 KO) was going to be his chance to go from young riser to world champion in just one fight.
Plant last fought in February, beating Rogelio “Porky” Medina by wide decision over 12 rounds in El Paso. Uzcategui, 27, stopped Andre Dirrell in a rematch in his last fight, winning the interim IBF title. He was elevated to full titleholder status after James DeGale vacated.
