On the eve of tomorrow’s big middleweight showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, trainer Abel Sanchez says all the excuses coming from Canelo (regarding his previously failed drug tests) and the ‘aiding and abetting’ by his team will finally come to an end.
But Sanchez says this rematch isn’t about revenge for Golovkin, it’s about respect. And Golovkin will looking to command his respect through a bloodletting of Canelo. Sanchez goes on to say Golovkin has had a different edge during this training camp, which he believes has his fighter more dialed-in than ever.
“Gennady has trained hard for this fight. He has had a different edge in this training camp and has trained with a purpose,” Sanchez said. “To win a fight you have to try to win the fight. You win a fight by doing damage to your opponent and making it a battle. Does Gennady want to knock out Canelo on Saturday night? You betcha and it will be a public service to the sport and the Mexican beef industry he has selfishly maligned.”
Fans who are sick of hearing about Canelo’s drug tests can take solace in knowing that all the pre-fight banter is now essentially over. Tomorrow both fighters with lace up the gloves and have their chance at vindication.
For Canelo, he’ll be looking to make the point that he’s undoubtedly the better fighter of the two, and hopefully escape the dark cloud that has hovered over him the past six months. Meanwhile Golovkin and his team will be looking to knock Canelo off of his pedestal as the biggest star attraction this side of the Atlantic. All the ingredients for a spectacular fight are there, and now it will be up to the fighters to cook up a hot batch of whoop-ass tomorrow night.
