Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez came into Las Vegas in a must-win situation tonight, having lost two straight fights to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, and the super flyweight veteran and former top pound-for-pound fighter looked good in a bounce-back victory over Moises Fuentes, knocking out Fuentes in the fifth round.
The official time of stoppage was 1:44 of round five.
Gonzalez (47-2, 39 KO) has probably put himself back in the title mix with this win, as he’s still one of the biggest stars and best-known fighters in the hot division. He didn’t start blazing in this fight or anything, but he picked up momentum and confidence as it went along, and by the fifth round was battering Fuentes (25-6-1, 14 KO), who was knocked out for the second straight fight.
We’ll have to see against a legit super flyweight contender how much Gonzalez really has left going forward at age 31, but he’s at least back in the conversation.
Gonzalez landed 37% (145/390) of his total punches, and a whopping 48% (122/256) of his power shots. Fuentes landed just 19% (47/244) of his total punches, and 25% (46/184) of his power shots.
