Former super bantamweight titleholder Hugo Ruiz looked like he might finish things early, but wound up going the distance against former bantamweight title challenger Alberto Guevara, winning a wide decision to open the Pacquiao-Broner pay-per-view in Las Vegas.
Ruiz (39-4, 33 KO) won on scores of 99-90, 99-90, and 100-89. BLH scored it 99-90 and 100-89 for Ruiz.
Ruiz was simply the more active and effective fighter throughout the bout, but after a first round knockdown of Guevara (27-4, 12 KO), the fight settled into repetitive dreariness, as Ruiz was in control but not particularly dominant, as Guevara was able to stay away just enough to make it a bit of a bore.
Ruiz landed 94 of 517 (18%) of his total punches, but connected fairly well on his power shots, going 79 of 265 (30%). Guevara landed 62 of 207 (30%) of his total punches, and 33 of 89 (37%) power shots.
