The February 9th Showtime broadcast headlined by Gervonta Davis vs. Abner Mares is now a tripleheader. The station announced via press release that the co-feature pits unbeaten Mario Barrios against Richard Zamora, while former champion Javier Fortuna opens the broadcast against Sharif Bogere.
Barrios (22-0, 14 KO), representing my native San Antonio, has yet to face a true test, and I wouldn’t say that Zamora (19-2, 12 KO) fits the bill. The latter was supposed to fight another tall, unbeaten prospect in Logan Yoon this upcoming Friday, but Yoon suffered an injury earlier today.
Fortuna (33-2-1, 23 KO) had what can only be described as a bizarre 2018. In January, he missed weight in his first lightweight appearance against Robert Easter Jr., ultimately losing a split decision that would have been a split draw but for a second-round point deduction. He then moved to 140 pounds against Adrian Granados, only to fall out of the ring in the fourth round and force a No Contest.
Bogere (32-1, 20 KO), the man responsible for one of my favorite images in the sport, has quietly put together a 10-fight unbeaten streak against nobody of note since a 2013 loss to Richar Abril.
