IBF and WBC welterweight titleholder Errol Spence Jr is set to face Danny Garcia next, we know that much. It was announced in-ring basically as soon as Spence’s win over Shawn Porter was official this past Saturday, and we’ve already discussed the bout a bit.
The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger reports that the early word is the fight is going to take place on Jan. 25, and will be another FOX pay-per-view event. No notes on location, but one would assume Las Vegas, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, or Texas.
Spence (26-0, 21 KO) scored probably a career-best win on Saturday over Porter, who tested him in ways nobody else has to date, and Spence proved up for every challenge, digging in and fighting his ass off against a guy who never goes away in a fight.
Garcia (35-2, 21 KO) has been met with a mixed reception as Spence’s next challenger. Personally, I have no real issue with it, other than the fact it’s not Terence Crawford, but I’m also not going to waste my energy screaming into the void about a fight that just plain is not happening any time soon, and had no reason to suspect it was going to be next. Garcia’s a qualified challenger, still in his prime, and probably the best actually available guy right now.
