As Canelo Alvarez’s stature in the sport has grown, so has his willingness to speak truth, to boldly proclaim and speak his piece.
The middleweight/super middleweight/now light heavyweight hitter on a Wednesday conference call took queries from media, and managed to throw darts at, no surprise, Gennadiy Golovkin. But he also slung a sharp arrow at Demetrius Andrade, as well.
Here are the top takeaways from the Canelo call, as he bangs those drums for the Nov. 2 step-up scrap against 175 ace Sergey Kovalev, in Vegas and on DAZN.
Canelo was asked if he saw GGG’s tough fight that he had with Sergiy Derevyanchenko this past Saturday night.
“We saw it. Obviously, for me, Derevyanchenko won the fight,” the 52-1-2 pugilist stated, on a call presided over by his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. “It was a fight where he really looked well. It was his fight. Regarding GGG, we all know, everyone knows, it’s unnecessary to say more, but he looked slow, and I think I gave everyone the pathway to see how to hurt him, which is the body, and that’s what we saw.”
Now that Golovkin has another middleweight title belt, does Canelo think the third fight will happen in the future? A lot of people want to see it, he was informed.
“Like I said before, and I’m going to repeat it again,” the 29-year-old told media. ”I said it before the fight, and I’m going to repeat it. For me that fight presents no challenge to me right now. We fought two times, 24 rounds. I beat him, so he represents no challenge. However, what he does represent is some good business, so if they offer me something really good, maybe the third fight can happen. But for me, no, because he represents no challenge for me.”
Ouch, that was a sharp combo, wasn’t it?
We all know Canelo is a superlative defender; he showed it when he was asked if he felt pressure from DAZN during negotiations to fight GGG again.
“More than any pressure, what was happening is the fight was getting complicated because there were other interests involved, but pressure on me, no,” he stated. “I always know what I want, and what I want is what I’m doing now. They may have wanted the GGG fight, but as I said before, he represents no challenge for me, so I didn’t feel any pressure.”
Calm in the pocket, he is.
And hey, what about other potential challenges? Like, say Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade?
“The truth is he hasn’t fought with anyone, hasn’t fought against anyone, and he’s also boring, very boring,” the Mexican said, aiming a harsh barb at the Rhode Island pugilist with a 28-0 record and WBO 160 strap in his possession.
“Maybe he’s a good fighter, but he’s a boring fighter, and at the end of the day, when there’s a boring fight, people are going to blame me. I like fights where there’s action, where people can enjoy a good show. That’s very important for me. But also he doesn’t represent a challenge for me, as well, because he hasn’t fought against anybody.”
Oh yes, Boo Boo heard about the diss. He answered on social media:
