Eddie Hearn has confirmed a pair of accompaniments for the December 7th Andy Ruiz Jr.-Anthony Joshua rematch in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. The previously mentioned Alexander Povetkin-Michael Hunter matchup is “done”, as is a super featherweight clash between Scott Quigg and Jono Carroll.
The final potential member of the lineup, Liam Smith vs. Jessie Vargas, is presumably still in the works.
Both of these are excellent additions to a blockbuster show. Povetkin (35-2, 24 KO) just continues to chug along, beating everyone but the division’s elite, and Hunter (18-1, 12 KO) has been a standout since making the move from cruiserweight to heavyweight. Both are coming off of solid wins over Hughie Fury and Sergey Kuzmin, respectively.
Quigg (35-2-2, 26 KO), a former super bantamweight champion who put on an absolute war with Oscar Valdez last year, has been out of action since last October thanks to a “freak” arm injury scrapping a planned April fight with Jayson Velez, faces his first legitimate super featherweight foe in Carroll (17-1-1, 3 KO). The Irishman rebounded from a March loss to Tevin Farmer wit ha decision win on the Estrada-Beamon undercard.
