Shakur Stevenson vs Joet Gonzalez

Round 1: Stevenson comes out measuring with a jab as Gonzalez tries to do the dame. Stevenson tries to go down to the body with a straight left hand, and then follows it up with a combination that ends to the body. Gonzalez feints and Stevenson throws a straight left to the body. Stevenson flicks his jab, doesn’t land it but occupies Gonzalez’s hands. Stevenson comfortable laying back and using his natural athleticism to pick Gonzalez off from the outside. Straight left hand lands to the body for Stevenson again. Another left to the body scores clean for Stevenson. Stevenson 10-9.

Round 2: Stevenson pops a jab upstairs and then takes a step back before measuring an uppercut on Gonzalez. Counter right hand lands for Stevenson. Gonzalez lands a straight right to the body but is having a nightmare of a time landing on Stevenson. Left hook partially lands for Stevenson. Stevenson misses on a short left hook and the referee warns both fighters not to step on each other’s feet. Stevenson counters again with his fast hands to land on Gonzalez. Straight left hand lands again to the body. Gonzalez partially lands a right hand to the body at the bell. Easy rounds for Stevenson. Stevenson 10-9, 20-18.

Round 3: Gonzalez tries to press a little more but just walks onto punches from Stevenson. Stevenson is just too sharp, too fast, and too swift for Gonzalez early. Gonzalez covers up as Stevenson fires off a combination of punches. Straight left hand to the body scores well again for Stevenson. Hard feint comes from Gonzalez as he tries to force Stevenson to make his move first but he can’t capitalize on it. Stevenson throws a left hand and a right hook upstairs and smiles at Gonzalez. Stevenson might pitch a shutout at this rate. Stevenson 10-9.

Round 4: Stevenson pops a quick jab and then another as he keeps Gonzalez at his preferred distance. Stevenson continues to move his jab and keep Gonzalez from getting off anything meaningful. Gonzalez presses forward but still can’t get his sights locked on Stevenson. Counter left hand lands for Stevenson, who then smothers Gonzalez on the inside. Counter uppercut lands on the inside for Stevenson. Straight left hand lands to the body for Stevenson. Gonzalez needs to do something different, quickly. Stevenson 10-9, 40-36.

Round 5: Gonzalez comes out pressing right away but misses on a right hook to the body. Stevenson pops a jab upstairs and lands a clean left hand to the body. Stevenson lands yet another straight left to the body. Three punches come from Stevenson to the head and body. Counter shot lands for Stevenson along the ropes and Gonzalez has scarcely landed a punch in this entire fight. Straight left hand lands to the body for Stevenson. Stevenson slips a combination from Gonzalez with his back in the corner. Stevenson 10-9.

Round 6: Stevenson is calm and confident as he’s been having his way easily in this fight. Straight left to the body scores for Stevenson. Gonzalez throws a combination with Stevenson in the corner but he can’t land anything clean of effective. Stevenson is really just coasting in this fight, not overextending himself at all. Straight left hand lands for Stevenson following a jab upstairs. Gonzalez tries to work both hands once he gets in close and gets in a left hand to the body. Right hook lands clean for Stevenson. Stevenson 10-9, 60-54.

Round 7: Gonzalez presses forward and misses on some right hands. Straight right hand from Gonzalez partially lands. Gonzalez gets Stevenson in the corner and tries to throw while he has the opportunity. Gonzalez throws a flurry of punches with Stevenson in the corner and Stevenson defends basically all of the shots pretty well. Three more punches come from Gonzalez but doesn’t land them clean. Now Gonzalez gets in a clean shot with Stevenson back along the ropes. I think Stevenson is taking this round off deliberately. Gonzalez didn’t land much but he definitely outworked Stevenson in this round. Gonzalez 10-9.

Round 8: Gonzalez comes out pressing with his jab but Stevenson calmly takes a few steps back and tries to time a counter left hand. Straight right hand from Gonzalez partially lands downstairs. Straight left to the body scores for Stevenson twice. Check hook from Stevenson glances off Gonzalez. Stevenson flicks some jabs upstairs that stops Gonzalez’s momentum. Straight left hand lands to the body again for Stevenson. Stevenson goes right back down to the body with a left hand. Gonzalez tries to hook to the body on the inside but can’t quite land it clean. Left uppercut lands for Stevenson. Stevenson 10-9, 79-73.

Round 9: Gonzalez is on the attack to start the round but Stevenson is looking to counter and lands one. Gonzalez throws a flurry of body shots that are flashy but pretty ineffective. Straight left hand scores again to the body for Stevenson. Gonzalez rushes in and wrestles with Stevenson a bit before the referee calls a break. Straight left to the body scores for Stevenson. Jab lands upstairs for Stevenson this time. Stevenson slips a few shots from Gonzalez and counters down to the body with a couple of punches. Another straight left scores to the body for Stevenson. Stevenson 10-9.

Round 10: Gonzalez’s corner tells him he needs a knockout to win this fight. Gonzalez comes out pressing and Stevenson is looking to walk him into even more counters. Left hand counter lands for Stevenson, then one down to the body. Right hook lands to the body on the inside for Stevenson. Gonzalez throws two shots that Stevenson blocks. Gonzalez throws more punches with both hands but it’s not really landing. Straight right hand lands to the body for Gonzalez. Stevenson is easily defending Gonzalez’s punches. Right hand partially lands for Gonzalez this time. Stevenson 10-9, 99-91.

Round 11: Gonzalez looks for a right hand to the body that falls just short. Jab to the body scores for Stevenson. Jab lands upstairs for Stevenson. Straight left hand from Stevenson partially lands. Straight left hand lands to the body again for Stevenson, then another, then another moments later. Stevenson 10-9.

Round 12: Gonzalez flicks a jab upstairs. Hard combination comes from Stevenson and scores well on Gonzalez. Check hook lands for Stevenson upstairs. Straight left hand lands down to the body again for Stevenson. Hard two punches land well for Stevenson again. Stevenson measures another hard left to the body at the end of three punches. Left hand counter lands clean for Stevenson to the head. Gonzalez misses on two shots at center ring. Well, Gonzalez really had nothing to offer Stevenson, he was just outclassed throughout. Stevenson 10-9. I’ve got it a wipeout for Stevenson, 119-109.

Mikaela Mayer vs Alejandra Zamora

Round 1: Mayer comes out to center ring but Zamora comes out throwing first and in bunches. Now Mayer gets in a clean left hand and then a right, then another left, and another that puts Zamora down! Zamora gets up at the count of eight but she’s dazed. Right hand from Mayer lands upstairs and then another. Zamora throws back in self defense but this is looking to last much longer. Left hook lands upstairs for Mayer, followed by a left hook to the body. Mayer hasn’t been pressing the action since she’s had Zamora hurt like I’d expect. Mayer 10-8.

Round 2: Mayer comes out pressing forward, looking to land a right hand upstairs. Zamora is on the move now, not looking to exchange with Mayer anymore. Mayer tries two big body shots once she get Zamora to the ropes. Two more body shots land for Mayer and Zamora is looking like those are doing damage. Left hook clips Zamora upstairs just before the bell. Mayer 10-9.

Round 3: Mayer comes out using a long jab as Zamora throws her own jab just to keep out of range. Mayer backs Zamora to the ropes and lands a body shot. Mayer still not asserting herself as much as I think she could but lands two clean jabs upstairs anyway. Right hand lands over the top for Mayer. Zamora throws back and gets in a shot or two fo her own. Left hook lands clean for Mayer at the bell. Mayer 10-9.

Round 4: Zamora still on the move looking to counter. Zamora misses on a wide right hook to the body. Two shots land clean for Mayer upstairs. Mayer tries to loop a right hand and lands several clean head shots followed by a couple of body shots. More body shots land for Mayer as she bangs Zamora to the head and body. Mayer 10-9, 40-35.

Round 5: Mayer stalking to open the round and lands several big shots upstairs that rock Zamora. Why should this fight continue? Zamora has been taking a beating in this fight. Left hand lands to the body for Mayer. Left to the body scores for Mayer. Straight right hand lead lands for Mayer. Mayer strafes Zamora along the ropes. Mayer 10-9.

Round 6: Referee says Zamora has to show him he still has some fight left in her. Zamora is on her bike but Mayer partially lands a right hand. Right hand gets in upstairs for Mayer. Right hand lands to the body for Mayer this time. Double left hand comes from Mayer who then sneaks in a right uppercut. Double left goes down to the body lands for Mayer. More clean shots land for Mayer with Zamora along the ropes. Mayer 10-9, 60-53.

Zamora’s corner stops the fight between rounds. Mayer TKO-6.

Joshua Greer Jr. vs Antonio Nieves

Round 1: Greer steps to center ring and slips a couple of jabs upstairs. Greer tries to loop a right hand that makes partial contact. Greer pushes forward and misses on a straight shot. Greer steps out of range on a Nieves shot but then finds himself on the ropes where he takes a glancing blow. Greer steps forward and makes a little contact on one of his several jabs. Lead left hook from Greer gets blocked. Now Greer gets in a straight right hand to the body. Nieves falls short on a double jab. Greer lands a pretty good jab before skipping away to the side. Right hand to the body falls short for Nieves. Greer 10-9.

Round 2: Greer flashes a quick jab that doesn’t really land. Check left hook makes good contact this time. Nieves steps forward and throws a short combination that Greer mostly rolls. Nice counter right uppercut lands for Greer with his back along the ropes. Greer is moving around the ring pretty freely and being able to dictate the terms of engagement that way. Jab from Greer lands upstairs. Nieves gets in a body shot before he grabs Greer and pushes him down to the canvas. Double jab lands for Nieves. Counter left partially lands for Greer. Combination from Nieves misses. Greer 10-9, 20-18.

Round 3: Greer comes out and partially lands a check hook. Right hand lands clean for Nieves upstairs, getting Greer’s attention. Lead left to the body lands for Greer. Counter right uppercut lands for Greer, who then tries to time an overhand right that doesn’t land that clean. Greer continues moving his hands and has Nieves thinking defense for the moment. Two big punches from Nieves get slipped easily by Greer. Right hand scores for Nieves with Greer in the corner. Now Nieves lands two more body shots and Greer comes back wit h a clean uppercut to the head. That one clean shot takes the round back for Greer. Greer 10-9.

Round 4: Hard left from Nieves sends Greer reeling to the ropes! Greer tries to get his bearings back and nods at Nieves. Greer leaps in with a left hook but gets it blocked. Jab from Nieves misses. Greer partially lands a left hook upstairs but Nieves comes back with three punches, ending with a straight right to the body. Counter right and left come from Nieves at center ring. Nieves throws several punches but doesn’t make much contact. Right hand lands down to the body for Nieves, Greer gets in one too. Now both fighters trade right hands. I like Nieves in this round. Nieves 10-9, 37-39.

Round 5: Both fighters come out measuring with their jabs. Greer stalks forward and just misses on a straight right hand. Right hand goes down to the body for Nieves, followed by a couple jabs upstairs. Greer misses on two jabs and then eats a counter right over the top. Left hand scores for Nieves. Three punches come from Nieves but Greer ducks them. Sharp combination comes from Greer to the head and body. Nieves comes back but takes another clean shot from Greer before coming back and landing his own. Straight right hand lands to the body for Nieves. I think I’m actually going to edge this round to Nieves too. Nieves 10-9.

Round 6: A couple of jabs make some contact for Nieves to open the round. Left to the body lands well for Greer. Now Greer gets in a jab before covering up for the counter. Jab lands clean for Greer upstairs. One-two lands for Greer. Greer has a bloody nose but is starting to find a better rhythm. Counter right hand lands over the top for Greer. Nieves lands a clean straight right hand to the head. Another right hand counter lands clean for Nieves who follows it up with a combination to the body and head that lands well. That steals the round back for Nieves. Nieves 10-9, 57-57.

Round 7: Counter right hand lands clean for Greer and stuns Nieves for the moment. Greer takes the opportunity to strafe NIeves with a number of punches as he stalks Nieves across the ring. Counter right hand misses for Nieves. Greer misses on a jab upstairs but takes a clean few body shots from Nieves. Greer steps forward and lands two shots as he gets Nieves moving backwards. Both fighters get in each other’s faces at the bell and exchange words. Greer 10-9.

Round 8: One-two lands for Greer but Nieves gets in one in return. Nieves misses on a left hook. Nieves tries to double jab but can’t quite land it. Greer presses forward and lands a clean body shot and then a couple more to follow it up and Nieves is feeling those shots! Nieves is on his bicycle right now and Greer isn’t really able to cut him off effectively. Hard shot lands low for Nieves and before the referee can step in Greer hits him with another clean shot to the body that puts Nieves down! The referee knows it was a low blow first so rules no knockdown and gives Nieves time to recover. More body shots come from Greer to the body as he knows Nieves is tender down there. Hard shots come from Greer who continues to strafe Nieves. Counter left hook lands for Nieves now. Uppercut lands for Greer. Nieves gets in a right hand now. Greer 10-9, 77-75.

Round 9: Nieves comes out on the move as Greer looks for a place to land another clean body shot. Right hand lands upstairs for Greer. Both fighters trade jabs at center ring and Nieves lands a right hand to the body. Looping right from Greer doesn’t land clean. Now Greer lands a left hook. Nieves throws another right hand to the body and then looks to move out of the way. Two shots land for Nieves during an exchange. Nieves tries to work his jab but takes a clean hook upstairs. Greer 10-9.

Round 10: Last round. Greer stalking Nieves who doesn’t seem to have too much left in the tank. Nieves gets in a right hand shot that cuffs Greer’s head and puts him down! Greer gets up with a surprised look on his face and Nieves digs with several hard shots and Greer tries to counter. Greer steps forward with two shots and Nieves creates space for himself. Overhand right lands for Greer. Greer throws two more right hand but then eats a clean body shot that Greer felt! Two body shots land for Nieves and Greer tries to stand his ground. Well, with that officially ruled knockdown that’s 10-8 Nieves. That still makes it 95-94 Greer on my card.

Stevenson, 22, is a blue chip prospect in the sport, and Top Rank and ESPN have big plans for the former Olympic silver medalist. But Gonzalez, 26, is coming for the upset, and he’s a fighter who always gives a big effort.

The co-feature bouts will see bantamweight Joshua Greer Jr take on Antonio Nieves in a 10-round bout with a pair of minor titles at stake, and Mikaela Mayer facing Alejandra Soledad Zamora in a 10-round super featherweight fight.
