Ahead of this weekend’s middleweight title fight with Sergiy Derevyanchenko, former titleholder Gennadiy Golovkin is invariably asked some questions about his rival, Canelo Alvarez, and he explains why he thinks the media is more obsessive about the subject than he is...
Golovkin on Canelo fighting Sergey Kovalev:
“I think that was his only option. Among all the options he had, the only option for him was to take the fight with Kovalev.”
On who he thinks wins Canelo-Kovalev:
“I don’t know who is going to win but I know that Kovalev is gaining more from that fight than Canelo.”
On if he’s sick of having Canelo’s name tied to him, frequently being asked questions about him:
“I’m not [sick of it] but it’s interesting for me to observe you asking those questions on and on and on again. We have a lot of different things to talk about, we have a lot of interesting subjects, topics. And you asking about Canelo says something about you as journalists. Explore better options. Ask more interesting questions.
“I think it’s your problem, not mine.”
