I was almost right, apparently.
In a bit of last-minute mini-controversy, because there clearly hasn’t been nearly enough at this point, Joey Dawejko claims that he was given and subsequently signed a contract to replace Tyrone Spong against Oleksandr Usyk, only for Chazz Witherspoon to get the call instead.
Once again proving that I have approximate knowledge of many things.
Dawejko (20-7-4, 11 KO) definitely presents a more appealing matchup than the 38-year-old Witherspoon, though not by enough to get angry about this. As far as I’m aware, he’s still on track to welcome Murat Gassiev to the heavyweight division at some point; the two were set to go at it in July before “Iron” injured his shoulder, leaving Dawejko to take a decision over Rodney Hernandez instead.
I swear, Usyk’s (16-0, 12 KO) heavyweight debut is legitimately cursed. Someone needs to check if he’s started wearing a new hat recently.
